This tutorial session will cover the key measurements involved in designing and qualifying systems employing high-speed clocks and serial data signals. Starting with the basics of timing and amplitude, the session will develop the background for measurements such as jitter, noise, and rise time and the appropriate methods for measuring these quantities on a digital oscilloscope. Measurement examples will be presented for clock signals such as DDR2 as well as serial data signals for PCI-Express Gen. 2 and Serial ATA. In addition, the best practices for minimizing and compensating for errors caused by probing, cables, and instrumentation bandwidth will be presented.
