Understanding the Impact of 100G Ethernet

10G Ethernet has helped transform networking, yet its success is debated by many, depending on the criteria used to judge that criteria. As the IEEE begins the process to develop 100G Ethernet, this debate gets revisited. It is important to understand that 100G Ethernet will help to enable the wide-scale deployment of 10G Ethernet-related products and technologies.

The goal of this panel session will be to help educate the DesignCon community, which has a large percentage of component suppliers, as to how 100G Ethernet will help to contribute to the promise of 10G Ethernet.

Mr. Wirbel has worked with CMP and EE Times for 20 years, covering semiconductors, communications technology, aerospace, and advanced technology. He has also worked as science editor for newspapers in Albuquerque and Tucson. Mr. Wirbel is author of the book "Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy" from Pluto Press.

He co-manages the LBLnet Services Group, which is responsible for operating LBNL's Campus Area Network. Mr. Bennett is an IEEE standards association member, a contributor of end users' perspective to a number of Ethernet standards, chair of the IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet Task Force, and was ranked 40th of the 50 most powerful people in networking by Network World in December 2003.

Mr. Crehan is responsible for Ethernet switch and carrier Ethernet market research programs. His research in the field of telecommunications and networking is the most extensive in the analyst industry, and he is widely considered an authority on the Ethernet switch market. Mr. Crehan previously worked at Intel Corporation. He has contributed industry commentary to many technical and business publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, CBS MarketWatch, Investor's Business Daily, Business Week, Network World, Lightwave, San Francisco Chronicle, and EE Times.

Donn Lee

Mr. Lee's duties include designing networks, evaluating/deploying products, optimizing performance, and performing escalation troubleshooting. Previous to Facebook, he performed similar duties as a member of the Network Architecture team at Google. While working as a consulting systems engineer at Cisco Systems (CCIE #3262), he worked on large global networks and wrote his book "Enhanced IP Services for Cisco Networks," which is published by Cisco Press.

Ted Seely

Mr. Seely has over 15 years in both enterprise and Internet network operations and telecommunications industries. He has held positions in almost every aspect of computer networking, ranging from U.S. government contracting, health care, consulting, commercial enterprise, and telecommunication service providers. Mr. Seely has held positions in the IP network engineering department with Sprint where he held the title of principal network engineer. He then moved into the CTO organization where he currently leads a team responsible for Sprint's long-term IP architecture.

Jason Weil

Mr. Weil's primary responsibilities at Cox Communications include design and deployment of the core datacenters, IPv6 architecture and planning, design, budget, and management of core network expansion over Cox's new dark-fiber backbone. The goal of his team is to research, develop, and standardize a converged services architecture across an IP data plane. Mr. Weil has more than 10 years of experience in operations and engineering roles in medium and large service provider networks. He is actively involved in the IEEE HSSG Study Group, Cablelabs, and IETF organizations.
