DfM has slowly moved from a nice-to-have to a must-have feature of back-end design flows, particularly at 65 nm nodes and below. The foundries and EDA vendors appear to have finally cemented working relationships to provide DfM solutions to designers. However, from a design services viewpoint, it remains unclear the extent to which DfM is to be provided as a service in line with the other major challenges prevalent in VDSM technologies. This paper addresses the issues to be considered when including DfM as part of a design flow service.
