This paper will address how the need to support backhaul of wireless traffic over general-purpose access networks and the proliferation of protocols to be supported in base stations of various sizes have influenced the design of HW platforms in this space. Generic system and card block diagrams will be used to address how headroom for future expansion is best provided and the dynamic tension that is created between hardware and software designers during platform definition.
