Purdue Dean of Engineering and IEEE President Named Newest IEC Fellow at DesignCon 2007 in Santa Clara

Dr. Leah Jamieson, Dean of Engineering at Purdue University and IEEE President Receives IEC's Fellow Award today at DesignCon 2007 in the Santa Clara Convention Center

CHICAGO – January 31, 2007 – The International Engineering Consortium (IEC) presented Purdue Dean of Engineering and IEEE President Dr. Jamieson with the IEC Fellow Award today before her keynote address at DesignCon 2007, which takes place for one more day at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Honored with the most prestigious tribute from the IEC, Dr. Jamieson received her award in front of hundreds of industry professionals.

IEC Chairman of the Board John Pappas, who presented the award to Dr. Jamieson, stated, "All of the IEC fellows have provided distinct and remarkable contributions to academia and the industry, and Dr. Jamison's contribution is her example of the ultimate academic leader. We are especially pleased to recognize Dr. Jamieson as her contributions to education and engineering research are completely in line with the IEC's mission of catalyzing progress in both business and academia."

Leah Jamieson joins the ranks of other distinguished IEC Fellows such as Vint Cerf, John Chambers, Irwin Jacobs, Jack Kilby, Scott McNealy, Gordon Moore, David Packard, Hector Ruiz, and Andrew Viterbi.

"It is a great honor to receive this recognition. Purdue's College of Engineering and the IEC have a long history of working together to bridge the goals of education with the current and future needs of technology and industry," Jamieson said. "A primary goal is to prepare students to meet the grand challenges that engineers will face in the continually changing world.

The IEC Board of Directors established the IEC Fellow Award in 1994 to recognize individuals who have provided the information industry with a superior level of sustained, significant service. The areas of service considered for this award include education, technology, and industry leadership.

After receiving the honor from the IEC, Dr. Jamieson delivered her keynote address to hundreds of DesignCon attendees advising the industry that the traditional "school of thought" in engineering education needs nothing short of a revolution to properly prepare students for 21st century careers.

In 1976, Dr. Jamieson joined Purdue, where she is Ransburg Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering. She was director of the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering from 1990-94, director of Graduate Admissions from 1994-96, interim head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2002, and associate dean of Engineering for Undergraduate Education from 2004-06. She is co-founder and past director of Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), an engineering design program that operates in a service-learning context. This month she became IEEE President and CEO.

Dr. Jamieson's research interests include speech analysis and recognition; the design and analysis of parallel processing algorithms; and the application of parallel processing to the areas of digital speech, image, and signal processing. She has written more than 160 journal and conference papers. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

She received her S.B. degree in mathematics from MIT and her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Princeton University.

Industry professionals can still obtain access to major DesignCon sessions and the DesignCon exhibition floor, which closes today with a complimentary Exhibits Pass available at DesignCon 2007.
