Have you been burned lately by power-rail noise due to peaking of high-Q bypass capacitors? Have you followed the discussion forums on various PDN design methodologies? One of the most heated debates in the SI community concerns the optimum and proper ESR value of bypass capacitors. It was shown and demonstrated that by raising the ESR of MLCCs and bulk capacitors, PDN performance can often be improved. In spite of this realization, the ESR of bypass capacitors kept steadily decreasing. Now controlled-ESR bulk and ceramic capacitors are becoming available. This TecForum presents three controlled-ESR options from Sanyo, Kemet, and TDK. The TecForum will be followed by a panel discussion by OEM experts.
