HD video is rapidly gaining momentum as the costs come down and consumers begin switching from standard video technology. All the additional infrastructure needed for widespread HD use (i.e., cameras, TV video recorders, home editing and storage hardware, handheld devices) now need to be added. The design of these systems will typically require SoC implementation. Whether designing the video subsystem from scratch or using third-party intellectual property (IP) cores, it will be important to understand how to measure the quality of an HD encoder.
