Printed circuit board embedded passive components (resistors, capacitors, and inductors) offer many advantages to application design and circuit functionality. Among these advantages are reduced product system cost, increased functionality, and improved signal integrity. This presentation will investigate impedance characterization from 0.1 to 20 GHz for different embedded resistor geometries and terminal contacts. Embedded passive impedance measurements are compared to equivalent discrete surface-mount component measurements. S-parameter measurements are compared to simulation modeling. Methods are developed to show how to simulate and design high-speed circuits with embedded passive components.
