Embedded resistor and capacitor technologies enable high-speed performance in smaller size boards and packages at reduced system-level cost. Design methodology for embedded resistors is described as case study of a high-speed telecom board design. 78% of the SMT chip resistors from 50 Ohms to 12400 Ohm were embedded which allowed 40% reduction in board area. This enabled cost reduction of $25 per bare board even after including the additional cost of embedded resistors. With additional savings from reduced component and placement costs, the total cost savings were estimated at $42 per board making a strong case for using embedded resistors.
